How to Write A Reading Summary

Bibliographical Information

• Author. Title of the Book. Place of Publication: Publisher, copyright date.

General Summary.

• Introduce the author.

• Identify the author’s purpose in writing the book or the chapter of the book. 

• Present the main points of the book. Write a concise yet comprehensive essence of the discussion. Think that the one who reads your work has not read the book yet. Make sure to insert in parenthesis the page/s where an idea or a direct quote was taken from.

• Give a short description of the issues it is addressing, scopes and limitations, and the way these issues are organized. 

• Write a short critique in relation to the author’s intent or purpose in writing. You may want to evaluate how the author was able to accomplish the purpose in writing.
