Federico Villanueva Presents Paper at PBTS Theological Symposium

A theological symposium was held on October 10, 2022 at the seminary’s Chapel A with the theme “Dalamhati at Luwalhati: Theological Reflections on the Filipino Experience”. Federico Villanueva, PhD regional commissioning editor for Asia at Langham Publishing presented a paper entitled, Dalamhati at Luwalhati sa Kulturang Pilipino at sa Bibliya.

PRESENTER & RESPONDER (L-R: Dr. Michael Janapin, Dr. Rico Villanueva, Dr. Armand Canoy)

In his paper, Villanueva argued for a methodological rooting of hermeneutics in indigenous resources, mainly in language, to see more contextually relevant insights. Arguing from a contextual and biblical hermeneutics, Villanueva argued that dalamhati (grief or lament) turns to luwalhati (praise) through the experience of pag-luluwal (literally to “give birth”). Paradoxically, lament turns to praise when one expresses true lament.

Dr. Armand Canoy and Dr. Michael Janapin, president and academic dean respectively gave their response.

Delegates to the symposium included seminary professors, seminarians, pastors, and the laity, numbering 70 in total.
